Private Vienna Old Town Walking Tour

(56 Reviews)
  • Duration: 02h 30 min
  • On Foot

Overview

Vienna’s historic city center should be one of the highlights of your trip – it is packed with world-famous sights and monuments related to Vienna’s imperial past! The best way to discover the old quarter is on foot with one of our friendly and enthusiastic guides.

Your guide will meet you directly at your centrally located hotel or a meeting point in the city center. He’ll take you to the most important sights, explain the history and share intriguing stories and anecdotes with you. Of course he also knows where to take the best pictures!

First you will be introduced to St. Stephen’s cathedral in detail. Freeze in awe in front of the majestic gothic structure with it’s great South Tower and the roof covered with 230.000 glazed tiles. Then your guide will show you the amazing area behind the cathedral with its narrow streets and hidden courtyards. See the house where Mozart wrote “The Marriage of Figaro” and marvel at the typical “Pawlatschen” access balconies!

Across the famous Graben street you arrive at the plague column, a unique masterpiece from the baroque era. Take a quick glimpse into the marvelous church of St. Peter and walk along the Kohlmarkt, Vienna’s most elegant shopping street. Of course you visit the vast complex of the Imperial Palace (Hofburg) extensively. Admire the Spanish Riding School, the stables of the Lipizzan horses and the church of St. Augustine, where Emperor Franz Josef married Sisi. You also see several locations from the famous movie “The Third Man”. At the end of the tour, your guide shows you the Sacher hotel, the Albertina museum and the Monument against War and Fascism.

I booked the 2.5 hour private walking tour of Vienna’s Old Town for our visit to Vienna. Vienna a la Carte promptly responded to my initial email to book the tour and kept me informed of all the details right up until Wiebke met us at our hotel. Our guide, Wiebke, was informative, personable, and kept us moving at a pace suitable for my in-laws and our teenage daughter. A wonderful way to learn about Vienna!

I booked private walking tour in Vienna and a small group trip to Salzburg in August. The tour of Vienna was fantastic. Wiebke was wonderful; she met me early in the hotel because i wanted to start early and spend the rest of the day exploring. She was very flexible in terms of depth / agenda for the day and provided a great history summary for the 4 hours we spent walking around. If you are in Vienna for a few days, I would highly suggest to spend the first day with a private tour guide – its interactive, detailed and gives you great insights into the history of the city. The trip to Salzburg was also wonderful – great way to see country while driving through smaller towns and making a couple of short stops.

I arranged this tour only 24 hours in advance, and received a rapid, accommodating response from Vienna A La Carte. Walter met me in lobby of my hotel and for the next 2.5 hours we walked old Vienna. He was incredibly knowledgeable (has been in the business for decades) and I enjoyed his dry sense of humor. I was also appreciative that he described not only the achievements and highlights of Vienna, but also the struggles and darker parts of history. It was a wonderful tour and I would highly recommend them.

We had two tours led by Brenda. One, a driving tour outside the city and the other a walking tour in the old part of the city. Irish by birth, Brenda has an enormous knowledge of her adopted city. She truly loves art and history and her ability to describe in detail the history of obscure pieces of statuary is amazing. There are many guidebooks that can give you a walking tour of the city or of a museum but Brenda provides insight that you will never find in a book. The two 3 hour tours cost a total of €600 thus it is quite expensive but well worth it.

My Wife and I took a 1/2 Day Tour of Vienna guided by Michael. He is a very knowledgeable, friendly and excellent companion. We walked at a leisurely pace, chatting about the landmarks, asking many questions and learning about Austrian History and current day life. We walked away well-informed, happy, relaxed and satisfied with our tour. Thank you Michael.
