Private Danube-Valley Tour from Vienna

(17 Reviews)
  • Duration: 08h 00 min
  • By Car

Overview

The gorgeous Danube Valley is one of our country’s true gems and is always worth a visit. Take a side-trip from Vienna to discover Austria’s wine country, quaint towns and medieval villages and visit the world-famous Melk Abbey.

Your guide will pick you up at your Vienna hotel. Climb into a minivan or limousine and depart Vienna, bound for the Danube Valley. Upon arrival explore Dürnstein at your own pace and marvel at the town hall, the medieval courtyards, the rustic wine taverns and the abbey of St. Augustine with its famous blue tower. Opt for a short hike up to the fortress, where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in the 12th century. Don’t miss your opportunity to sample the locally made apricot marmalade and the delicious apricot schnapps.

Further up the Danube, in Spitz, depart on a Danube river cruise (available April through October). A modern cruise ship takes you to the upstream town of Melk in 1.5 hours. Have lunch on board (not included) and enjoy the amazing scenery while listening to the commentary explaining the sights.

Afterwards visit the world-famous Melk Abbey, founded almost 1000 years ago by the Benedictines. Your tickets are reserved in advance so you can skip the entry line, then take a private tour of the abbey, including the Abbey Museum, the Marble Hall, the baroque library and the Chapel.

On the way back to Vienna drive across the Western part of Lower-Austria and traverse the famous Vienna Woods. The tour ends back at your hotel in Vienna.

Myself & my wife visited Vienna from July 4 to 8. Our tour itinerary was planned by VIENNA a la CARTE. We corresponded with Ulrich. The itinerary was executed flawlessly! We were met at the airport and transferred to our hotel. The next 3 days were quite hectic! Our private tour guide was Brenda who spoke fluent English. She picked us at 9:30am and for the next 3 hours we were kept busy. Around 12:30pm we had lunch at the famous ‘Demel’, probably the best confectionary in town. After lunch, we walked the old town with Brenda, who was patient with our slow pace! She explained all the sights professionally. Her knowledge of Vienna is impressive! In the evening we enjoyed a VIVALDI concert. The next day Brenda took us around the palaces & gardens of Vienna. After lunch, she drove us through the Vienna woods, which was so peaceful! In the evening, we attended MOZART concert. On the last day, Ulrich took over from Brenda. We drove to the Wachau valley, took a river cruise to the MELK Abbey, where the best of Baroque architecture awaits you. Ulrich spoke flawless English and was very helpful & informative throughout the day trip. Conclusion: If you want to see Austria at your own leisurely pace and enjoy evening concerts with tickets arranged, please contact Ulrich at Vienna a la Carte. Everything ticks like clockwork and you do not have to worry about anything! They are very friendly but very professional which we liked very much. If we visit Austria again, we will go through Vienna a la Carte, for sure!!

We booked a private tour of the city for one day and another full day to see Danube Valley and river cruise. The city and Danube are musts to see when you are in Vienna but what made the experience memorable was our guide Michael. Michael spoke great English, was very knowlegable about historical facts and even helped us find something we forgot from home. Michael even gave us great tips on restaurant choices. Do not hesitate to book a private tour with this company and ask for Michael!!

Vienna a la Carte was the only tour company that was willing to pick us up in Vienna, deliver us to Krems for a Danube cruise, pick us up at the other end of the cruise in Melk, arrange a Melk Abbey guided tour and then drive us to Salzburg at the end of the day. We really appreciated their flexibility in putting something together that wasn’t pre-packaged and we had a great day.

We had a relatively short time in Vienna and wanted to maximize our time. We took two separate day trips- Budapest and Wachau. We preferred Wachau, as 5/10 hours of the the Budapest trip was spent driving. The trains in Vienna are really great, but I don’t think the trip would have been possible to coordinate trains, boats, and tours in a single day. The private tour was a perfect way to see, but more importantly, learn about Vienna , Austria, and Eastern Europe. Pick up from hotel, All transportation, All tours were pre-arranged and we wasted no time during the day. The guides were very knowledgeable, friendly, and spoke excellent English.

We were a family group of three generations and had a wonderful day! Michael our tour guide was informative and we enjoyed our stop at Durnstein. We then had a lovely lunch aboard the Danube River cruise boat, with reserved tables, and an easy trip to the Melk Abbey and private tour. Overall, it was an outstanding trip.
