Mauthausen concentration camp in Upper Austria was one of the largest labour camp complexes in the Third Reich. Between 1938 and 1945 about 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned here. Half of them lost their lives. Today, Mauthausen Memorial stands as a reminder of the darkest days of Austria’s history.

We booked a private tour to Mauthausen. We were 4 of a family. We had Ben as our driver and it was very pleasant and full of information about the camp and all we could see around and during the trip. We recomend this experience. Thanks for all Ben.
We had a lovely time with our guide, Josef. He was knowledgeable and entertaining. What an educational and important experience.
To Marlies & the Vienna à la carte Team….my name is not John. Very truly yours, James Balfour. The driver for the trip was excellent. From the looks of what is left of the place named Mauthausen the place was obviously a horrible experience for the people who were interned there. I don’t see how it wasn’t horrible to the people who were in charge there. Mauthausen is one of those kind of places I have heard of or seen in documentary films on television for 50 or more years. And since I was a tourist in that area of the World for the first time and since I saw Mauthausen listed as a site to look at, I thought I should go see one of those kind of places. I found out at Mauthausen a person can see the evidence of some of the horrible things that human beings can do to other human beings. I have observed battlefields long after the fact, but after walking around Mauthausen I could see it was a different kind of place where misery and human deaths had taken place. I have never doubted such places existed during World War II, but now I have actually been to one of those places were horrible events occurred and I saw what was left of the evidence. Mauthausen is a place were people were incarcerated and murder took place.
The tour consists of a round trip Mercedes bus ride to the concentration camp. There were only 6 in our group. The tour Includes an audio guided tour of the camp which is set up by the driver. Markus was very good in coordinating everything for us. We didn’t stop for lunch on the way back so if you get hungry, make sure you bring a snack. However, there is a bistro on-site. The tour probably isn’t recommended for children. Even young teenagers who don’t appreciate or have patience. To really get a fully experience it takes a lot of reading and listening to the audio guide. This isn’t like other museums you can just walk through and get the full picture. You must listen and read to fully understand. All in all it is great! Such a dark time in history.
Took a private tour (since we’re a group of 7) from Vienna to the camp. Drive was smooth, car was VERY comfortable and clean for 7 of us – space for an 8th person up front if needed, got to watch a movie for half the drive also of some background / documentary on the camp which was a great precursor of information. Driver was also very knowledgeable and spoke perfect English. Gave us some history on the areas we passed and answered ALL of our questions that we kept bombarding the poor guy with – but it was great to have all the things we were thinking of answered. Also since it was private we were able to do everything at our own pace and make some minor tweaks as needed to have it accommodate our group.
